The Health Benefits of Coffee More than Just a Caffeine Fix

by: Andreanne Hamel

The Health Benefits of Coffee More than Just a Caffeine Fix

This morning when you got up and made your morning cup of coffee, its very likely you did it to get that fix of caffeine. It has long been known that caffeine is mildly addictive, which leads many of us to using coffee as the start to our day. What you probably dont know, however, is that drinking your morning cup has many healthy benefits.

In fact, according to some researchers, the benefits of moderate coffee intake far outweigh the risks associated with caffeine.

In this article we will cover how your morning cup of coffee is actually helping you. It isnt all about the caffeine fix to get that morning boost. There are also many surprising benefits to a few cups a day.

Benefits of Moderate Coffee Intake

The key to getting the health benefits from your favorite drink is moderation. Caffeine itself can have some negative effects when used in high doses. Too much coffee can affect your cholesterol levels, your heart rate, and make you jittery. When taken in moderation though, there are positive outcomes to drinking coffee.

The benefits of moderate coffee drinking include:

  1. Antioxidant Power: A study performed at the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania, concluded that the typical adult consumes 1299mg of antioxidants by simply drinking 2 cups of coffee per day. Antioxidants are known to help prevent cancer, as well as having many other proven health benefits.
  2. Cancer Preventative: Japanese researchers published a report, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, which stated that men who drank coffee regularly had about 50% less risk of developing liver cancer.
  3. Lower Risk for Diabetes: A study performed at Harvard School of Public Health showed that coffee reduces the risk of developing type-2 diabetes significantly.
  4. Parkinsons disease: A study performed on Japanese men age 53 and over was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study stated that men who didnt drink coffee were three times more likely to develop Parkinsons disease when compared to men who drank 3-4 cups per day.
  5. Alzheimers disease: At the University in Ottawa in Canada, in a study related to the onset of Alzheimers, it was found that coffee was a significant factor in reducing (and delaying) the onset of the disease. The study has lead to further investigation of the topic.
  6. Asthma Reduction: For asthma sufferers, drinking coffee may reduce asthma related symptoms. A report published in the Edinburgh Medical Journal even stated that drinking coffee may work as a temporary treatment until a patient can find an inhaler.
  7. More: It doesnt stop there; other studies have shown that coffee can reduce the risk of colon cancer, reduce the formation of gallstones, improve cognitive function, and more.

Espresso Brewing: A Solution to the Caffeine Problem

Another thing that many people dont know is that the brewing method used affects the amount of caffeine extracted from the coffee grounds. One brewing method that brings out the flavor, and with less caffeine than drip-style coffeemakers, is an espresso machine.

The pressure used in most espresso machine types forces the flavor out of the beans. Since the water doesnt sit in the grounds, it also extracts less of the caffeine. In other words, if you want to gain the healthy benefits of coffee, while lessening the risks associated with caffeine, youre better off brewing yourself an espresso or a latte.

With all the benefits of moderate coffee intake, it may just be time to find yourself a Breville espresso machine, or a Capresso Impressa E9 so that you can take advantage of this healthy (and delicious) drink!

Since 2006, Andranne Hamel has turned her passion for espresso and technology into an educational espresso machine website updated daily with new coffee and espresso articles.

Pineapples: The Healing Fruit of the Tropics (with Pina-Banana Orange Smoothie recipe)

Pineapples: The Healing Fruit of the Tropics
(with Pina-Banana Orange Smoothie recipe)

By Monique N. Gilbert, B.Sc.
http://www.MoniqueNGilbert.com

For a natural and tasty way to improve your health and boost your healing capacity, add fresh pineapple and pineapple juice to your diet. Pineapples are nutritionally packed members of the bromeliad family. This delightful tropical fruit is high in the enzyme bromelain and the antioxidant vitamin C, both of which plays a major role in the body’s healing process.

Bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory with analgesic properties, encourages healing, promotes well-being and has many other health benefits. Bromelain is very effective in treating bruises, sprains and strains by reducing swelling, tenderness and pain. This powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect can also help relieve osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and reduce postoperative swelling. Additionally, bromelain can relieve indigestion. The enzyme contained in fresh pineapple helps break down the amino acid bonds in proteins, which promotes good digestion.

Pineapples also provide an ample supply of vitamin C, a commonly known antioxidant that protects the body from free radical damage and boosts the immune system. Vitamin C helps build and repair bodily tissue and promotes wound healing. The body uses vitamin C to help metabolize fats and cholesterol, absorb iron, and synthesize amino acids and collagen. Collagen is one of the primary building blocks of skin, cartilage and bones. Vitamin C also decreases the severity of colds and infections.

Furthermore, due to its high vitamin C content, pineapples are good for your oral health as well. Recent studies have found that vitamin C can reduce your risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease. Besides increasing the ability of connective tissue to repair itself, vitamin C also increases the body’s ability to fight invading bacteria and other toxins that contribute to gum disease. Periodontal disease, which destroys gum tissue and underlying jaw bones, has been linked to heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

So if you are searching for a natural way to enhance your body’s healing mechanisms, promote overall good health and tantalize your taste buds, pineapples are the way to go. Choose the fresh fruit because it has the most healing properties. Unfortunately, most of the bromelain in canned pineapple is destroyed due to the heat used in the canning process.

When choosing a fresh pineapple, do not judge ripeness solely based upon color. There are several varieties on the market that range from green to golden yellow. The most important factor in determining ripeness is smell, let your nose help you decide. Ripe pineapples give off a sweet, fresh tropical smell. Avoid pineapples that give off an unpleasant odor or have any soft spots or areas of dark discoloration. Once home, let the pineapple sit on your counter at room temperature until ready to use. This will preserve its sweet and tangy flavor.

To prepare pineapple, you need to peel it, remove the eyes (the thorny protrusions within the puffy squares of the skin) and the fibrous center. One way to do this is to remove the top of the pineapple with a sharp knife. Then cut the pineapple lengthwise into 4 wedges (quarter it) and place each pineapple wedge horizontally on a cutting board. Carefully cut the fruit from the outer skin, and cut out the eyes and fibrous center core.

Another way is to cut off the top and bottom of the pineapple, place the pineapple vertically (upright) on a cutting board and carefully slice off the outer skin. With a sharp paring knife or the end if a vegetable peeler, remove the eyes. Don’t cut too deep, just enough to lift out the section that contains the eye. Then, slice the pineapple crosswise and remove the fibrous core individually with a cookie cutter.

Once the fruit is prepared, it can be diced and eaten fresh, added to salads and entrees for an exotic flavor, or made into tasty tropical drinks and smoothies.

To get you started, try Monique N. Gilbert’s delicious, nutritious, cholesterol-free smoothie recipe. It’s high in bromelain, vitamin C, beta carotene, potassium, thiamin (vitamin B-1), riboflavin (vitamin B-2), iron, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and soy isoflavones.

Will Drinking Milk Help You Live Longer?

by: Byron J. Richards, , Founder/Director of Wellness Resources, Inc.

There are plenty of people (I’m not one of them) practicing or believing in alternative health who think that drinking milk is simply bad to the bone.  A new meta-analysis from 324 milk-related studies by European researchers concludes that regular milk drinking may reduce the chances of dying from illnesses such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke by up to 15-20 %.

Milk is not for everyone.  Some are allergic to it.  Some are lactose intolerant.  Some get too much mucous from consuming it.  Some simply don’t like it.  However, painting it as an evil food that should be avoided if you want to be healthy is not supported by human science.

I personally think that skim and 1% milk should be avoided, as the increased concentration of milk proteins may lead to increased risk for allergy.  Ideally, you would get milk from cows that are allowed to graze in pastures so that the omega 3 content of the milk is increased.  There is a milk quality issue in our country based on fast food agribusiness.  So it does pay to drink better quality organic milk as much as possible when you have the choice.

There are many bioactive factors in milk that are very good for your immune system.  Lactose as a form of sugar is not nearly as glycemic in nature as other simple sugars.  The cholesterol content in milk has been incorrectly villified.  The calcium in milk is protective to your digestive tract and good for bones, as well as a helper to your metabolism.

Most of the people promoting the anti-milk rhetoric in alternative health have personal problems consuming milk.  That does not mean that their personal shortcomings are science for everyone.  I could tell you something wrong with any food.  Keep in mind – we must eat.

The conclusion of this study is that on the whole, milk consumption as part of your diet is associated with less mortality.

“How to Choose a Water Purifier: Water, Water Everywhere…but Not a Drop to Drink? “

by: Stan Howard

(free to publish)
You’re thirsty after working in the sun on a hot Saturday afternoon. You head to the kitchen and pour yourself a cool glass of water and gulp it back greedily. The immediate effect is to cool you down, quench your thirst, and re-hydrate your body.
But did you give any thought to what it’s doing to your body? It’s true that doctors suggest we drink 8 glasses of water a day, but if you don’t drink the right kind of water, it can have a harmful effect on you!
Wait a minute, you say: “The right kind of water???” How many kinds of water are there?
The answer is: several! Water is not just a colorless liquid that quenches our parched tongues. Water is a necessary part of life and not just for keeping us hydrated. Most people don’t know that water contains other properties that allow you to live a healthy life:
1..Your water is supposed to deliver essential nutrients and minerals needed to live. For example, calcium, magnesium, potassium and trace elements — which doctors recommend we take in — can be found in some drinking waters, but not all. Are you spending an arm and a leg on supplements to ensure you’re getting these minerals when instead you can get them simply and cheaply by drinking the right kind of water?
2. Your water should help balance out the acidic state of your body. Simply put, our bodies’ tissues produce waste that is acid in nature. When these acid wastes accumulate –because of pollutants, modern diet and stress — our tissues slowly deteriorate. Chronic diseases such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes and osteoporosis are associated with this acid condition. Water should help balance out our acidic state by being alkaline.
3. Like a natural stream, your water should have antioxidant properties. Oxidization hastens cell breakdown, while foods with antioxidant properties prevent it. You don’t need anyone to tell you that you want a body that generates cells, not destroys them!
4. Your water should be free of contaminants. Many people are shocked to learn that there can be over 2000 contaminants in an ordinary glass of tap water.
So aside from quenching your thirst, water should also be full of minerals, be alkaline, and be antioxidant. But did you know that most water is exactly the opposite? And did you know that waters from many water purifier systems fail these basic requirements?
It’s true. People buy water purification systems thinking that they will successfully filter out the “bad stuff” and keep the “good stuff” in water. Unfortunately, many systems, even the expensive ones, either do an inadequate job of filtering out the “bad stuff” or they filter out everything– both good and bad. In fact, there are filtration systems for which people pay top dollar, that doctors recommend you don’t drink from on a long term basis — because they can make your body even more acidic!
But before you completely swear off water, know this: it’s not all bad news. There are excellent purification systems that do a good job of creating healthy, alkaline water with as much antioxidant property as a glass of orange juice!
Protect the health of your family. Before believing the advertising claims of any system, and before spending a fortune on bottled water, really compare the choices in home purification systems. Find out:
1. How do the health benefits of each system compare? (contamination, acidity, antioxidant, minerals)
2. What’s the taste like? If you don’t love the taste, you won’t drink enough water.
3. How much will it actually cost me?>

Juicing: Why NOT?

Juicing: Why NOT?

by: Neesha Dosanjh Meminger

This article may be published in its entirety, electronically or

in print, free of charge, as long as the bylines are included

and all accreditation is intact.  A courtesy copy of your

publication would be appreciated.

Juicing:  Why NOT?

In today’s world, pollution and chemicals come at us from all

angles; our water contains toxic levels of metals and chlorine;

our produce is tainted with pesticides; and our meat and meat

products are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics.  It is

small wonder that so many of us fall prey to chronic ailments

and disease.  So much so, that conditions like allergies, PMS,

and migraines have become as common as a cold or the flu.

In order to live a healthy and vibrant life in today’s modern,

fast-paced world, it has become absolutely critical to eat

consciously; including as much whole, unrefined, unprocessed

grains, meats, and produce as possible; supplement the diet with

vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids; get plenty of

rest and relaxation; reduce health-eroding emotions like anger,

resentment, and fear; eat organic whenever possible; and include

plenty of antioxidants in the form of dark, leafy greens and

fruits and vegetables.

All of these components are necessary in the building of Optimum

health and success, as well as combating and preventing illness

and disease.

Most North Americans do not get even close to their recommended

daily intake of fruits and vegetables, and juicing is an easy

way to accomplish just that.  Extracting fresh juice from raw

fruits and vegetables and drinking it right away, allows many

of the vital nutrients and enzymes to remain intact.  And, since

enzymes act as catalysts in almost every bodily function, juicing

plays a significant role in the fight against free radicals.  It

allows nutrients, antioxidants, enzymes, and trace amounts of

essential fatty acids to enter the body in a more bioactive form

than supplements.  In other words, the body is better able to

absorb all of nutritional value of the fruits and vegetables when

they are juiced.  The result of all of this maximum and efficient

nutrient absorption is increased energy and vitality.

In fact, Vitamin A, if taken in large doses in supplement form,

could lead to toxicity; whereas, beta-carotene, which is the

pre-cursor that the body then converts into Vitamin A in the

body, is water soluble, and carries almost no risk of toxicity.

Fresh vegetables, especially carrots, contain large amounts of

the more easily assimilated, and non-toxic form of Vitamin A,

beta-carotene, which is released with the rupture of membranes

when the vegetable is juiced.

Juicing is also a better way to get your vitamins and minerals

because all of the phytonutrients, soluble fiber, and many other

complex compounds that exist in the natural fruit also exist in

its juice; whereas, each nutrient is individually extracted when

it is in supplement form.  Since all nutrients work symbiotically

with one another, with each enhancing or balancing the other,

drinking freshly extracted vegetable juice allows you to get the

nutrients in combinations that exist in the food when it is in

its natural state.

Additionally, juicing provides a lot of soluble fiber; therefore,

the nutrients that are contained in the insoluble fiber of a

fruit or vegetable are released so that the body can make use of

them.  When fruits or vegetables are eaten whole, these nutrients

would not be available to the body as they would be contained

within the indigestible fiber.  Since fiber is such an important

factor in the elimination of waste and toxins from the body, and

keeping the colon and bowel cleansed, a high fiber diet is highly

recommended for optimum health and wellness.   Soluble fiber, as

well as aiding in the body’s elimination and detoxification

processes, is also the fiber that has been found to lower levels

of cholesterol.

Most of the bottled juices that are available in supermarkets,

and even health food stores, have been pasteurized in an effort

to eliminate harmful bacteria.  Unfortunately, the process of

pasteurizing includes subjecting fresh juices to extremely high

temperatures.  There are valuable and fragile enzymes,

phytonutrients, and other nutritional compounds that are

destroyed with the addition of heat.  Cooking, refining and

processing food strips it of its maximum nutritional value.

Freshly extracted fruit and vegetable juice also provides

another, major key nutrient: water.  Everyday factors like

caffeine, over-the-counter medications, salt, cigarette smoking,

and alcohol all act to dehydrate the body.  These factors,

combined with the fact that most Americans do not consume

nearly enough water just to reach the basic daily intake, never

mind compensate for what’s lost, can contribute to ill health.

Since fresh juices contain ample amounts of this vital substance,

this is yet another reason that juicing could be such an

important addition to an overall Optimum health and wellness

plan.

The benefits of juicing are many, while the downsides are few to

nil.  In a culture where the number of people who get their

daily requirements of fruits and vegetables, is dismally low,

juicing should be an absolute necessity and priority.  I have

educated many of my clients in the particulars of juicing, and

every single one of them has returned to my office full of

vitality, increased energy, and a great enthusiasm for fresh

juice.  They often go on to become staunch advocates of juicing

themselves.  When faced with skeptics, my question is usually,

Why not juice?

7 Health Benefits of Green Tea

by: Patricia Wagner

Want to enhance your health in surprising ways? Drink green tea.

This beverage has been used for thousands of years by the
Chinese. It has proved itself for centuries as worthy of being
included in our diet for its health properties.

Not only has this drink been endorsed for ages, but modern
science also has discovered astonishing facts about what
it may be able to do for your health.

There are a lot more benefits to drinking green tea than are listed
below, but here are seven:

1. Drink it to help shed extra pounds.

A study published by the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition in November, 1999, is encouraging. It shows that
this drink may enable people to burn more calories.

2. This ancient brew may help combat signs of aging.

That’s because it contains large amounts of vitamins E and
C which are antioxidants. Antioxidants have the reputation
of being able to combat free radicals that damage cells.
Cancer, heart attacks and diabetes can result from damaged
cell membranes.

In April, 1999, researchers at Case Western Reserve
University in Cleveland revealed that green tea may ease the
symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

3. This drink may help asthma sufferers.

Because it contains theophylline (a muscle relaxant), it can
help the muscles surrounding bronchial tubes to relax. This
helps asthma sufferers to breathe with less restriction.

4. Green tea may help lower blood pressure.

High blood pressure makes you susceptible to heart attack
and stroke. This ancient brew may also keep blood clots from
forming.

5. Green tea has been reported to help in the fight against
cancer.

Doctors from the prestigious Mayo Clinic found that green
tea extract given to four leukemia patients seemed to help
three of them experience regression of the disease. And even
the fourth patient showed some improvement. The reason the
doctors tried green tea extract is that a 2004 test tube
study showed that leukemia cells were killed by the
extract.

By the way, in Japan there are fewer reported cancer deaths.
Could it be because the Japanese drink a lot of green tea?

6. Drinking this beverage my help lower cholesterol.

Lowering cholesterol with no side effects has been reported
in studies using green tea. Your ability to fight heart
disease and ward off stroke is tied in with your cholesterol
count.

7. This brew may help your body fight infections.

The New York Times reported in April of 2003 that the immune
system’s ability to fight disease may be strengthened by
drinking green tea. Microbiologist Milton Schiffenbauer,
professor at Pace University (New York) stated, “Our
research shows tea extracts can destroy the organism that
causes disease. If we can stimulate the immune system and at
the same time we are destroying the organisms then it makes
sense to drink more tea.”

Now that you’ve learned 7 ways green tea has been shown to
help your health, why not give it a place in your daily
diet? It’s not a magic cure, but this proven ancient
beverage may just help you to be healthier.
